Former Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Tony Onyima has absolved the five southeast governors from blame over the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
He stated this while speaking to the Daily Sun in an interview. The former Information Commissioner said although the governors are the chief executive officers of their states they are not in direct control of the security apparatus and therefore should not be blamed for the proscription of the pro-Biafra group.
Asked if the view held by some Igbo people that the five South-east governors mismanaged the IPOB issue, by outlawing the activities of the group. How will that affect the election in Anambra State, he said, the issue of the group has been totally misunderstood.

According to him, ''This IPOB issue is totally misunderstood. It is an issue that is often discussed with so much hysteria, and some people don’t seem to understand the fundamentals. There are some security issues that some people don’t know that the governors know. They should also know they are the chief executive officers in their states; they are not really in charge of security.''
Apparently, backing the proscription of the group he said he does not see anything wrong with Federal Government's decision to act in the interest of national security as IPOB was overstretching their activities thereby transgressing the bounds of decency.
'' So, if an organization overstretches their activities to a point of jeopardizing the national security and the federal government decides to act, I don’t see any other thing the state governments should have done. I don’t think the south-east governors should be blamed. The blame should be elsewhere.''
